Securing a small powerboat alongside a pontoon
How to secure a small boat alongside using bow, stern and spring lines. Please note this for securing the boat to a pontoon that raises and lowers with the tide; do not use this method for securing to a jetty wall for example.

Our intention is to offer training modules on subjects, some of which may not normally covered during a formal training course but in our opinion are important factors when looking to purchase a boat or looking to get an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Boatability is based in Portsmouth, home of the Royal Navy. The main reason we chose this location to teach from is that we can cover all the navigation marks, hazards and rule of the road for boating in one of the best training grounds in the world. Please see our Google and Facebook reviews for what people think of us.

Here's a video of some MOB training I got asked to develop with Wetwheels Solent (Geoff, Keith and Karen), which is now going to be rolled out across their fleet. We came up with a simple and very effective MOB recovery system thanks to Dead Fred volunteering. And before anyone asks yes it does work with a lifejacket ;-)

Boatability has just taken on the management of 'True Colours' a stunning Rodman Muse 44. She was in need of a bit of TLC but as you will see with some hard work and the expertise of Liquid Glass Shield she is now back up to her former glory and ready for training and charters. For information Liquid Glass Shield is a company that uses the latest cleaning products out there with Nano technology...

PWC training with Ayrton and Colin on their new Seadoo 300x PWC, one serious bit of kit; not for the feint hearted that's for sure! A great day out everyone, thank you Ken, Oliver and Liam for your support
We find it easier to just drive our 17" boat all the way onto the trailer, saves grinding away on a winch, easy if you have the guide polls and rollers in the right place.
I thought u recognised the boat as it is very distinctly a terhi
Glad to hear it helped.
Nice video, thanks
thank you🌹🌹🌹
Very good. I have just finished Essential Navigation and Seamanship online and got the test questions wrong on this area. I now understand it and will go back and re-do the test. Thank you
Glad you found it of some use.
Which airplane is this turbine mounted in?
if the low whater is early than -6hours what do i do?
Hopefully he/she got a bollocking 🤔
Great video! Thx!
You say that the tide is at 165 degrees three hours after high water. Do you actually mean 159 degrees based on the tidal streams shown?
I'm doing this course on Friday unfortunately ive had no training apart from watching your video, Can you give me an answer below is an email I required for my course I'll never work on a boat ever I don't even use a vhf radio I use uhf radio but if I don't complete the course I loose my job bit unfair, so my acessor has send below email but I'm struggling to think what he's asking for what my reply should be please 🙏 help application form and some photo ID (Passport or Driving Licence). Initially I will set you a few questions to check that you have still retained the knowledge necessary to pass the written exam. The main question is a distress scenario from which you have to produce a Distress Call and Message. for example: Your vessel VIKING QUEEN callsign GGDF MMSI 123456789 is in position 54 degrees 33 minutes North, 002 degrees 04 minutes West. Your vessel is on fire and you require immediate assistance. There are ten people on board and gale force winds. What is the Distress call, and message that you would transmit by voice after sending a Distress Alert by DSC? .......................................... Your answer should look like this: Call Mayday x3 this is VIKING QUEENx3 callsign GGDF MMSI 123456789 message Mayday VIKING QUEEN callsign GGDF MMSI 123456789 Position 54 degrees 33 minutes North, 002 degrees 04 minutes West On Fire Require Immediate Assistance 10 POB Gale force winds Over.
Anyone help me o this I'm lost not sure what I'm doing if I'm filling in slots application form and some photo ID (Passport or Driving Licence). I'm doing a course I no nothing about the vhf course unfortunately ive still got to do the course, once I've sent out a Distress Call what should I expect back in word please 🙏
If you are doing the training online, as you work through the course it will explain everything very clearly. If doing the classroom version the instructor will also go through this with you.
@@BoatabilityUK it was done a year and a half ago
@@edwardmcgee01 Providing you are in range you would expect to receive a DSC Distress digital acknowledgement, followed up by a voice call from the Coastguard.
Thanks for video
Glad you found it of use, thank you.
Hi Lee, Thank you for the kind feedback, it really is appreciated when customers make the effort to let us know they enjoyed the training. All the best Nick
Took my course back in the summer , a great team and enjoyed it to. Very professional and can’t recommend enough.
The volume is really low cant hear anything..
Thank you for your kind feedback, much appreciated. Nick
Thank you for your kind feedback, much appreciated. Nick
Brilliant instructor …thanks for this short but simple video, hope to come over for some training
Glad you found of use. Nick
Than you very much for having shared it !
Well said
How can you test this without risking that someone receives the distress signal? I know there is probably no VHF antenna connected, but is that really enough to make sure no one picks it up? I know nothing about VHF radios…
Hi, we use training radios which have been modified allowing us to operate the distress function, please do not attempt this on a live radio. I hope this helps clarify things for you. Regards, Nick.
@@nickedtheboat Ok, thank you for responding. That was very helpful. I’m three weeks away from taking a SRC course/exam.
Is this basic sea survival
It is the RYA Sea Survival course.
this was the first actual video out of 7 that made sense of this all!!! thank you!!!
Glad to hear it helped, thank you for the feedback.
In my first work I always used Woodglut plans.
Useless video for my ICC powerboat training
Should there be a washer/bearing that sits in the rear propeller. Our old one had one but not not sure if it’s needed on the new one
Wow, I appreciate you trying but this was a horrible stuttering mess. Considering the importance of the subject please delete and try again with some sort of coherent script. Thanks!
Please pop in to discuss, I would love to meet you and get some tips from an expert in the subject.
Once you have done a Distress Call what are you expecting to come back ? Please help
@@nickedtheboatHappy to help, what would you like to know?
Use a 15mm socket not a screw driver and a hammer
A usefull guide, thanks. Early on (at 50s) you push the distress button once before scrolling to distress and then the 3-second push and hold to activate. What is this step for?
It is purely to explain that if you simply hold the button it takes 5 seconds to send a distress, except it doesn't send what's wrong with you due to not having selected the situation from the distress menu, it will be undesignated. Whereas, if you do go via the menu and select an option then it takes 3 seconds to send, but this time you've sent what's wrong as well as your MMSI, Position (providing it has a built in GPS or is linked via an MEA cable to your Plotter, it also sends the Time. Hope this helps. Nick
Sorry, if it's not on our UA-cam channel then I'm afraid not.
Is there a video on changing the out drive oil? This looks like the generation that I have
Does anyone besides me find it odd that one prop is a three blade and the other is a four?
Missed out that little black disc at the end of the shaft! Replaced a few years ago. Engine recently steaming a bit. Related, I wonder? Removed impeller yesterday and heads came off 2 of 6 screws! Mole grips ordered. Pain in the a***!,
Top man
Because boats hold a fascination for me, I often use them in my art projects it is interesting to see them safely moored, many thanks, I have subscribed to learn more,
Hi, this is an old video, greatly appreciated in sharing this! Do you happen to know if the compact flash card you used was type1 or type2?
Sorry we don't have the boat anymore so don't know if type 1 or 2 I'm afraid. Thought we would leave the video on in case people don't have the later systems. Thanks for watching.
Just subscribed looking forward to watching your videos 👍🏻👍🏻 FORTNIGHT FISHING PEMBROKESHIRE 🤟🏻🤟🏻
I love these duo props When you put them in reverse the boat backs up nicely. Still doesn't go straight, but it has some grunt to it.
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Emerson Rocky Instablaster ;)
@Rayden Luciano thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im trying it out atm. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Rayden Luciano DAMN IT ACTUALLY WORKED! Literally hacked my ig password after about 40 mins by using the site. I had to pay 15$ but for sure worth the money =) Thanks so much you saved my ass!
@Emerson Rocky Glad I could help :D
Never seen it that low wow
Thank you Alan, this is one interesting video to watch to understand how the DSC system works, useful for me as I am preparing for my SRC!
2nd comment, that was brilliant mate, who ever you are.
The instructor was very patient and proffesional, he puts the football refs to shame.
where can i do the online test ?
well instructed.
Well explained thanks.
Definately got a bow thruster, can see the wash and hear it, the problem was caused by the wind getting the canopy, it acts like a sail, no harm done and he moored up safely, We,ve all been caught our one way or another
